Diversity is the characteristic that makes people unique; inclusion refers to the cultural norms that make people feel welcome and belong.

Workplace diversity has become an axiom in modern day business, as more organisations are beginning to think diversity and inclusion as part of their corporate strategy. For an organisation aspiring to thrive in the future, D&I is not something to be done, but the basis on which such organisations should exist; its mission, vision and core values should already integrate diversity and inclusion by design at the core.

Such is the energy of synergies only available in communities and clusters driven by diversity and inclusion. Workplace diversity has become an axiom in modern day business, as more organisations are beginning to think diversity and inclusion as part of their corporate strategy.

Bonilla points out that inclusion is spending time understanding those differences and being intentional about creating policies, procedures, processes, and practices that embrace diversity. It is also being willing to listen to diverse perspectives and change the way a company does things, especially in the mid to longer terms, based on strategic market directions and insights.

Workplace productivity is in the effectiveness and efficiency of the minds within an organisation. Productivity is higher in organisations where employees are engaged, recognised and appreciated. Employees with ideas and skills from different walks of life provide room for more creativity and the critical examination of tasks at diverse levels, which further results in better decisions and higher efficiency and effectiveness.

D&I gives room for increased flexibility, such that employees with various skills sets have the opportunity of responding to situations, resulting in more consistent performance – each person’s strength covers another’s weakness. On the other hand, when a team is composed of people with similar skills, they become vulnerable to change and are unable to handle unexpected situations, which, of course, affects the organisation negatively.
