Host, Delta State, topped the medals table with 320 gold and 200 silver medals as the 21st National Sports Festival ended, yesterday, in Asaba, Delta State.

But the biggest upset of the Games was Team Bayelsa, which finished second for the first time with 132 gold, 115 silver and 90 bronze pushing Team Edo to the third position. Edo, winners of the 2002 edition, had 78 gold medals.

The closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba was filled with fanfare, as school children entertained the spectators. Over 12,000 athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory competed for honours in 38 sporting events, across venues, in Asaba and other towns, including Ogwashi-Uku and Okpanam.

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, represented President Buhari at yesterday’s closing ceremony, where he presented the games’ trophy to the Chairman of Delta sports commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa. Delta State has proven over the years that it is the number one state in sports in the country and the victory on home soil made it the eighth time that the state is winning the sports festival in 10 appearances.
