Building collapse has been on a steady increase in Nigeria, drawing concerns from stakeholders in the built sector, who, among others, have expressed worry that cases of building collapse in the olden days were rare as against what has become commonplace in recent times,The agonising trauma experienced by families of victims whose lives were cut short by a series of building collapses recorded in various states in Nigeria still lingers.
They have also condemned developers and site engineers, among others, who, in a bid to manage resources, cut corners by making inappropriate construction decisions and using substandard building materials to erect buildings not capable of standing the test of time. A panel set up by the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aimed at investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, among other recommendations, recommended forfeiture of the project site in accordance with Section 25 of the revised LABSCA Regulation 2019.
One of the victims’ mothers, who was rescued and rushed to the hospital, was paralysed because of the incident. These highlighted cases, among other structural collapses recorded in Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, reportedly led to the resignation of the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako.In 2016, the roof of the Reigners Bible Church International, an evangelical congregation, collapsed during an ordination of a local bishop in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Scores of worshippers reportedly lost their lives as many others sustained varying degrees of injury.
