The Senate on Tuesday in Abuja asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately declare state of emergency on drug abuse in Nigeria so as to safeguard the future of the country.

The Red Chamber also mandated its Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, to liaise with relevant agencies of government such as National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control to convene a national discourse on drug abuse. These steps, it declared, are very important for relevant stakeholders to take in order to properly understand the root causes of the crisis so as to come up with policies and legislation that can help curb the menace.

6 addicts used pharmaceutical opioids and 238,000 drug abusers used amphetamines. Senator Hussaini said the report further revealed that 'the prevalence of drug use per geo-political zone as far back as 2017 shows that the North West accounted for 12% , North East 13.6% , North Central 10.0% , South West 22.4% , South South 16.6% and the South East zone 13 8% .
