Malam Abba Mato, the council chairman, who addressed the beneficiaries in Daura on Friday, said the initiative was aimed at policing the area and to ensure that each commercial cyclist was easily identified.
He said each of the vests bears the registration number of the motorcycle and name of the motorcyclist for easy identification and regularisation of the operations of the cyclists.“The programme is intended to cover the 11 wards in the area.“I urge sister local governments to emulate this programme to secure our people, as most of the crimes are being committed through the use of unregistered motorcycles,’’ he said.
Also speaking, Malam Danladi Me-Mai, the Supervisory Councilor in charge of Revenue, said the initiative would further boost the revenue of the local government and put some control measures on operations of commercial motorcyclists in the area. He said his office was making efforts to control the instances of cyclists picking passengers outside designated motor parks. He added that they would collaborate with the National Union of Road Transport Workers to achieve this, with the support of all stakeholders.
In his remarks, the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar, represented by Alhaji Lawal Haruna, a title holder in the emirate, lauded the efforts of the council in introducing such effective security control and check mechanism.
