Despite repeated claims by the Cross River State Government that the state is free of Covid-19, the authorities of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital confirmed yesterday that five persons had tested positive in the hospital.

Two of the cases are medical staff of the UCTH, its Chief Medical Director Ikpeme Ikpeme said in a circular. The CMD said the tests were performed using the PCR technique at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control accredited laboratory in Ebonyi State. The staff are however making “tremendous progress along the path of recovery and are doing well,” he added.

He assured “our staff and patients that a positive Covid-19 test is neither a ‘death sentence’ nor a reason for any type of fear or stigmatization.”He urged all staff and patients to ”abide by the guidelines on hand and respiratory hygiene as advised by the state and federal governments through their various agencies, especially the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control .Ikpeme had, last week, also announced that a patient tested positive for COVID-19 in the hospital.

Governor Ben Ayade on Thursday said he had handed over the state to the federal government as far as COVID-19 is concerned.
