The agricultural sector won’t get it right until it competes favourably with quick-yielding trades, the Executive Director, Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, Prof. Garba Sharubutu, tells OKECHUKWU NNODIM in this interviewCocoa has been a crop of concern to the minister. I say this because when we went to brief the minister over the issue of cocoa research, his first challenge to us was that some of the best breeders we have in this country are the Yoruba.

You cannot allow a situation where most of your products are just being deposited in a place. I cited an example with palm fruits and, right now, there are cocoa seedlings that have not been taken up. We have a lot of palm trees that have not been taken up. Our wheat are also not taken up and we budget for all these. But you cannot continue to develop products and nobody comes to take them.It is because agriculture is not a quick-yielding trade.
