The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers says it will make its members available for the scheduled maintenance of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos as part of its corporate social responsibility.

NICE said in a statement that its team embarked on an inspection of the bridge to ascertain its status/integrity at the section alleged said to have failed and discovered that some of the joints were really in a bad shape, needing prompt attention. “The particular expansion joint in question, which had caused a lot of fear among road users, is due for total replacement.

It added that the bridge “was designed as a series of independent cantilevered units across the whole length. The design allows for measured maximum lateral movement at the cantilevered ends. This allowable movement is usually between 1.5mm – 5.0mm.
