Regions dependent on China’s longest river, the Yangtze, are deploying pumps and cloud-seeding rockets as a prolonged drought depletes water levels and threatens crops, and a two-week heatwave is expected to continue.

The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze have experienced temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius over the past month, with experts blaming climate change-induced variations in the western Pacific subtropical high, a major determinant of east Asian summer weather. The agriculture ministry has dispatched 25 teams to key regions in an effort to protect the autumn harvest, according to the Guangdong Daily, a newspaper of the Shanghai government.

The heatwave is likely to last for another two weeks, making it the longest sustained period of extreme temperatures since records began in 1961, experts with China’s National Climate Center told the official Science and Technology Daily on Monday.
