One of the early pointers to the presence of possible cancer in the prostate is the estimation of the PSA , which is a protein molecule secreted by the epithelial cells of the prostate. Finally, abdominal ultrasound scan and transrectal ultrasound and cystoscopy are specific investigations that are necessary to determine the extent of the condition. Plain X-rays of the chest and abdomen as well as areas of bone pain cannot be ignored. Specialised X-rays like intravenous urography, CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis plus or minus MRI scan depending on what is being looked for are also important to determine the extent of the disease.
