The Chairman Drug and Substance Abuse Committee, Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy, Pharm Obaloluwa Ojo, has said that the rising crime rate in the country is due to drug abuse.

Ojo, who spoke in Lagos on Monday during a senstisation walk organised by the Academy to fight the scourge of drug abuse, said that 25 per cent of the world’s population were involved in drug abuse.

“Also, one out of four drug users in this country today are women. Before now the records indicated that the age of the users was between 15 and 65 years, but unconfirmed reports say it has gone down to about seven years-old. This means that the case has reached primary school. Without being verbose, we can say we are almost approaching an epidemic. That is the reason why something must be done urgently,” Ojo said.

He added, “We are trying to tell people that drugs are not to be taken as food. They are neither snacks nor everyday items that can use anyhow. Drugs are poisonous, but they confer health benefits when used in a controlled environment. If they are misused, just as many people are doing at present, there will be a problem.

Nope, I’m not convinced. I blame an extremely high unemployment rate, coupled with insufficient minimum wages and a dwindling economy. Do drugs agitate the problem? YES. Are they the main cause? NO. Please be honest with yourself.
