At long last, the Nigerian Government has directed all tertiary institutions in the country to work out modalities of taking their classrooms online. It is not as if this is a spectacular achievement on the part of the government, but at least, it is a positive response to the calls I have been making as regards the need for Nigerian institutions to migrate online as being done in other parts of the world to minimise the negative effects of their forceful closure due to COVID-19.
Whether by sheer coincidence or otherwise, many state governments have begun some form of teaching for their pupils using radio and television. In Lagos, JSS pupils are taught English Studies, Basic Science, Mathematics and Civic Education on Naija FM 102.7 between 12pm and 1pm. Ondo State has also recruited and trained 25 teachers for on-air programme in collaboration with the management of the State Radiovision Corporation , Orange FM and Alalaye FM.
Now that we have come to a point where the Federal Government is preaching online teaching, it would be good to lead the government on as to what the next phase of this campaign should be. It is time for government to go a step further by ensuring that tertiary institutions in the country move to the implementation stage. This is very important because it would be of no use asking institutions to migrate online just because it is the right thing to say.
Take for instance, the disbursement of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to all public tertiary institutions by the Federal Government. By the way, TETFUND was created as an intervention agency to provide supplementary support to all levels of public tertiary institutions. It is funded by two per cent education tax paid from assessable profit of companies registered in the country. In the last three years, these public institutions have received around N309bn as intervention funds.
These a political talks because he is aware that at the departmental levels in the federal university they are not even enough computers, projectors or internet connectivity to go online. Or do you want the lecturer to use his little salary to buy data to update a 1hour class.
With what will the lecturers use to go online, when the internet facilities are not working properly in the schools. The minister of education is a drunk fellow
Sir I am writing as insider in one of our institution in Nigeria right now I have been dismissed by management from service for blowing whistle how funds are been embezzle by the governing council chairman, provost, bursar and some of the so called union executives.
