It was one situation that naturally caused me trepidation in those days. The embarrassment it used to cause-especially mechanics-and still causes can be disorienting! Nothing, beside the crime of murder, excites a policeman in those days and till date, more than the suspicion of having a stolen vehicle in one’s possession.
But the other day I had occasion at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, VIO Complex Ojodu, to watch some VIO operatives electronically and manually inspect a supposedly imported car before it could be cleared for the MVAA to register.
Truth is, with the sophistication that the Lagos VIO employs to electronically interrogate the onboard computer of any car and the bar-code deciphering technology at their disposal, it’ll be impossible for such a criminality to pass through the VIO, on the database of Lagos’ MVAA, except a vehicle that leapfrogged the VIO examination prior to registration. That, I dare say, can only happen as an insider job at MVAA and when caught, heads must roll.
