Being a producer has helped me to be better actor — Funmi Holder

So, as a Yoruba person, I decided, with the director of the movie, Joshua Ojo, that we should start telling our own stories because if one goes on Netflix and other such platforms, one would see Chinese people and others selling their own stories and cultures. Why can’t we do the same? I love historical productions anyway. I then decided to do something about great women in history so as to sell our stories and our cultures, and to remind the younger ones of our history.

Also, we worked with many star actors and making sure all their schedules were in sync took a lot. The set involved a lot of crowds and we had to work with a lot of ‘props’. We were at it for a year because we did a lot of special effects.Clarion Chukwura is a fantastic woman and strong actor. She is versatile and has been known to interpret her roles exceptionally well. I did not want an actor that is predictable. She puts a certain carriage and dignity into her roles.

It wasn’t easy, especially considering that I like to be hands-on in everything I do. However, the director always pulled me back out of the producer mind frame to being an actor. It was challenging but I guess we pulled it off.Being a producer is more taxing because one has to manage people and be in control of a lot of things. You cannot afford for things to go wrong under your watch.

It would have made it a lot easier. Producers wouldn’t always need to set up stages from the scratch. Actually, the government, corporate world and others that have the resources can establish them for us. A film village would be well appreciated in the movie industry. We do not have any support and that is the truth. I had to use the money I saved up over the years to make this because nobody wants to support one. We would be very happy if corporate bodies and the government can help us.
