While the winners in the general elections are making plans for their swearing-in ceremonies, how to form their governments, and fine-tuning policies and programmes, the losers will be counting their losses and mapping out plans for escaping from looming political wilderness

. They will be sworn into office on 29 May, thus drawing the curtain on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

But there are casualties and there are casualties. The former may recover on time via appointments or make political comebacks in 2027 as has happened in the past. Some may even retrieve their mandates via the tribunal and courts. For the latter casualties, except the unexpected happens, it is safe to say that, all things considered, their political careers face a bleak future, now and even in the foreseeable time to come. Some may quit the political scene completely as their time is over.

Mr Ortom’s suspension is not unconnected with his open declaration of support for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, as against the candidate of his party, Atiku Abubakar, in the presidential election. He is one of the G-5 governors in the PDP who were opposed to Atiku as the presidential candidate of the party.

His ambition was to succeed his boss, Mr Buhari, which has now been frustrated by the emergence of Mr Tinubu, a fellow South-westerner, who will be in the saddle for four or eight years. After him, power is expected to shift to the northern part of the country for another eight years. In fact, no one knows the political party he belongs to now. He canvassed support for the candidate of the PDP, Atiku, in the presidential election. However, to the surprise of many observers, rather than support the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in his home state of Bauchi, he pitched his tent with the candidate of the APC, Sadique Abubakar, who lost the contest to Governor Bala Mohammed.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives still has age on his side and may find his way back to political reckoning again. He is also considered to be very popular in his district in Bauchi State. But for now, he will be in limbo as those he opposed take charge at the state and federal levels.By now, Bukola Saraki, former Senate president, may have adjusted his lifestyle to being outside political office or holding a position of political influence.
