Allegation of compromise against us not tenable –C’River magistrates

Magistrate Richard Bassey at Governor's office gate in Calabar on Tuesday after he was revived by his colleagues during a protest over 24 months unpaid salaries Protesting magistrates in Cross River State have said that the allegation of compromise levelled against them, which was one the reasons given for their withdrawal from the courts, was not tenable.

“That letter is a tacit way of terminating our employment because they are rendering us redundant by asking us to go and stay at home for an indefinite period. The letter didn’t say ‘in the next one week we will sort it out and you will come back to your desk’.

Abuo, however, said the magistrates had been complying with the order to stay away from work to show that they were law-abiding. The magistrates, who had not been paid for two years, were asked to withdraw from the courts following several days of protests.
