The hashtag “Dr. Li Wenliang dead” was the most searched topic on Weibo late Thursday, with over a billion views and over 1.1 million comments.“The ranking seems to be manipulated,” King-wa Fu, who studies Chinese censorship patterns at the University of Hong Kong, told AFP. Weibo users complained that their posts and comments on the doctor’s death were being scrubbed on Weibo and messaging app WeChat, sparking anger at what was seen as an attempt by censors to mute public opinion.A photo of the late ophthalmologist Li Wenliang is seen with flower bouquets at the Houhu Branch of Wuhan Central Hospital in Wuhan in China’s central Hubei province on February 7, 2020.

Weibo users also posted screenshots of apparently leaked “reporting instructions” Thursday night that appears to instruct local journalists to play down Li’s death.
