'Katherine's presence in this world was truly special, and her legacy will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her,' the Mobile-Area Mardi Gras Association said in a statement.

Katherine Ashley Smith, crowned the 2017 queen, was “a truly remarkable individual who touched the lives of many,” the association said in a Facebook post.

Another mourner wrote: “My heart is broken. Our forever Queen! Praying for Katherine’s family, & friends. A soul gone too soon.” Smith was crossing Airport Boulevard on McGregor Avenue, when Spencer Strickland, 37, allegedly ran a red traffic light and crashed his pickup truck into Smith’s SUV, Mobile police said Sunday.
