Why Texas shouldn't worry about Simms-Applewhite flashbacks when it comes to Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers
The first time the golden boy found out days in advance that he would play quarterback for the Texas Longhorns , his older, more accomplished teammate bristled. All of the breathless, fawning media attention was just too much. There was no need to turn this into a controversy yet. And the media, Major Applewhite said, was “blowing the story out of proportion.” That, believe it or not, was a quarter-century ago.
Maybe Steve Sarkisian will turn to Manning in a playoff game, and the kid won’t meet the massive expectations. But this arrangement is anything but doomed, which is a far cry from how the Applewhite-Simms tandem began. In 1999, after Mack Brown made the son of Super Bowl winner Phil Simms his biggest-name recruiting signee ever, the Longhorns lost their season opener in stunning fashion to North Carolina State. Applewhite, a sophomore, wasn’t terrible in that game, but he wasn’t great, either.
