South Alabama is Major Applewhite’s second go-round as a college head football coach, and first since the 2018 Armed Forces Bowl loss to Army ended his second and final season at Houston.
“I’m no different than anybody else,” Applewhite said. “It’s just like a big day at work. You have anxiety, you have excitement. There’s things that you’re concerned about that you’re not sure if you’re gonna see or not see. Voisin, who led the Jaguars with 65 receptions two years ago, tore the ACL in his left knee during a Week 2 win over Southeastern Louisiana last September. He underwent reconstructive surgery and sat out spring practice, but has been on the field without limitations for most workouts in preseason camp.
“I have passed out twice from it,” Taylor said. “It’s like that feeling right before you get the flu, when your body just feels terrible. That’s how it feels.” “I was thinking maybe it could go away, maybe it was tolerable now because I lost all that weight,” Taylor said. “When the possibility popped in my mind I just kind of ran from it. I just didn’t think about it. … When problems started coming back, I knew it was really inevitable.”
• South Alabama will continue to award the No. 5 jersey to a different player each week this season, though Applewhite has slightly tweaked the way it is presented.
