Speed cameras are officially coming to the Bay Area. On Oct. 13, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that allows some of the state’s largest cities – San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Los Angeles, Glendale and Long Beach – to test speed cameras on their streets. Officials in San Francisco and Oakland have since signaled that they intend to participate in a five-year speed cameras trial period, as is laid out in Assembly Bill 645.
’s website further notes that San Francisco’s cameras will be located on the “12% of streets” that account for “68% of traffic-related severe injuries or fatalities” in the city, and will be distributed across all 11 districts, “in areas with a wide range of socioeconomic characteristics.” The initial addresses selected by
