Early detection lowers the chances of diseases.

It's Women's Health Month, and UPMC is encouraging women to get tested early. Doctors say catching an illness before it escalates makes it easier for them to treat you. The longer you wait, the harder it may be to stop the disease.According to an OB-GYN at UPMC, women should get multiple screening tests a year, depending on their age.Screening tests like Pap smears and mammograms can catch cervical cancer and breast cancer before you develop symptoms.

'There were a lot of women who weren't coming to get screened. There was a challenge getting them in, and women put their care on hold. I started to see a lapse in care,' said Dr. Chavonne Momom-Nelson.Here are the tests that are recommended frequently for women:Starting at age 21, you should get a Pap smear every three years. If you are 40 years or older you should be getting a mammogram every year.
