The annual Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, with 50,000 volunteers expected — here’s how to participate

“This is a three-hour event that happens once a year, but it has ripples through society,” said Eben Schwartz, marine debris program manager at the California Coastal Commission, which oversees the event. In 2009, plastic grocery bags made up 8.7% of the pieces of litter found in California during coastal cleanup days. Last year, they totaled just 1.3%.
