Riviera Utilities and Fairhope Public Utilities sent out notices to customers on Monday encouraging them to avoid unnecessary usage.
Customers are encouraged to conserve water, especially during peak usage hours like 5 to 9 am and 3 to 7 pm. Wallace says Riviera Utilities are still able to meet the system's demands and, so far, voluntary water conservation is helping the low levels. "Unfortunately, we had a mechanical failure at one of our wells, which took just a little over a million gallons out of our system,” said Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan. “We have recently added a well that pushed us up to eleven million gallons. Two days ago, we used 9.5 million gallons. So, you can do the math yourself and see if we lose a million gallons in our system. Unfortunately, it puts us in a position of having to enact water conservation.
