There are six different difficulty settings available in the Silent Hill 2 remake, all of which can be selected from the very first time the player opens the game. Much as in the original Silent Hill 2, players can modify the difficulty across two separate categories: Combat Challenge and Puzzle Challenge. The first, of course, affects the difficulty of regular enemies and bosses in Silent Hill 2, while the second affects both the solutions to and the clues given towards its puzzles.

Light mode for combat is mainly recommended for players new to survival horror games - it likely won't pose a significant challenge to those who have experience with the genre, or indeed with the original Silent Hill 2. For puzzles, Light mode is best for anyone who worries they might struggle with puzzles, and refuses to check out an online Silent Hill 2 puzzle guide if they do get stuck - otherwise, higher difficulty levels are almost always preferable in that category.
On Standard, players won't be able to coast through the game unscathed, either; they can expect to die a handful of times to certain difficult encounters, as well as the majority of the bosses. However, none of these encounters will ever feel overly difficult or downright impossible. After a few attempts, players will likely have a better grasp on the required strategy, and be able to overcome these challenges.
