A new religious release program is coming to the Marysville School District this month.Hellions Academy of Independent Learning (HAIL) will be offered to studen
Hellions Academy of Independent Learning will be offered to students at Edgewood Elementary School. The program is put on by the Satanic Temple and students will be able to participate once a month.
"When they hear it, it’s initially shocking, oh the Satanic Temple," Everett said. "They automatically think evil and awful things. We are not devil worshipers. We are non-theistic Satanists." Marysville Parent and community organizer Betty Elswick is one of two parents who contacted the Satanic Temple about bringing the counter program to the district."We wanted to make sure that we had a program that was teaching compassion and empathy and also inclusion," Elswick said. "Several parents had expressed concerns about their kids coming home and being bullied or made fun of and teased for not participating in the other programs in the area.
The program in Marysville comes as the legislature is deciding whether or not to pass House Bill 445, which would require school districts to adopt a policy authorizing students to be excused from school to attend a released time course in religious instruction.
