Jose Naranjo said he caught a massive koi fish from a neighborhood pond on April 5.

Jose Naranjo arrived at his usual fishing spot on the city’s Southeast Side hoping to get lucky and catch some bass — but what he ended up reeling in was much more interesting. On April 5, the San Antonio angler said he caught a massive koi fish from a set of ponds near the City Base Landing and Research Plaza. Naranjo said he fishes at the neighborhood pond because it’s close to his house and usually holds decent bass.

The avid fisher took advantage of the photo opportunity before releasing it back into the water as part of the pond’s catch-and-release system. “I’m not sure how the fish got in there,” he said. “It’s possible someone put it in there.” Koi fish originated in Japan many centuries ago but are often kept in aquariums or backyard ornamental ponds worldwide. It is possible Naranjo’s catch was a pet someone released into the pond.
