Rutgers faces Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium on Saturday.
The Scarlet Knights travel to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech in their final — and most challenging — non-conference contest of the fall.
The matchup is a Big East throwback, but Rutgers will hope for a different result: the Scarlet Knights are 0-6 all-time at Lane Stadium, losing the contests by an aggregate score of 251-111 and an average margin of defeat of 23.3 points.
Virginia Tech can present some schematic issues defensively that could give the Rutgers offense some trouble, but the Scarlet Knights still have the best player on the field with running back Kyle Monangai. After gutting Virginia Tech last year, Monangai will register his third straight game with at least 150 yards as the Scarlet Knights pull away in a physical, grind-it-out affair. Despite lopsided scores in its first two wins, Rutgers’ defense was underwhelming.
This was billed as a matchup between CFP dark horses in the preseason, when Virginia Tech and Rutgers were the darlings of the sport. The Hokies’ hype took a nose dive within the first month of the season, while the Scarlet Knights lived up to expectations through two games. That trend will continue for both teams in Blacksburg, where Rutgers will pick up where it left off from the 35-17 beatdown it handed Virginia Tech in Piscataway last season.
