Neighbors are reacting to a fatal officer-involved shooting in their neighborhood Friday morning.
A road is blocked in Riverton, Utah, on Friday, March 8, after a police pursuit ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting earlier that morning. A suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Joshua Watson, was shot and killed after a pursuit that started in Sandy and ended in Riverton.
“Just woke up, came outside and neighborhood was full of police officers,” resident Dallas Jones said.“It’s sad,” Jones said. “It’s something nobody wants to happen in any of your neighborhoods.” Riverton Police spokesperson Josh Lee said the "low-speed chase" with officers began after a suspected car burglary in Sandy.Police used spikes to stop the car.“The suspect presented a weapon and a threat, the officers fired, and the suspect is now deceased — no officers were hurt,” Lee said.“Doesn’t make me feel the most safe,” resident Benjamin Ayre said.Lee said the Salt Lake City protocol team will conduct a complete investigation.
“To ensure all protocol was followed, especially with a suspect deceased, it's an unfortunate situation but we want to make sure our rules were followed,” Lee said.
