Areas along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor are at a higher risk of experiencing excessive rainfall runoff and flash flooding Tuesday.

A few months ago, when we looked at the summer seasonal outlook, we didn’t have “below 90 degrees in July” on our weather bingo card. However, that’s exactly what we are expecting this week across South and Central Texas — and no one seems to be complaining much. The below-normal temperatures will come with a good chance of rain and thunderstorms every day. The rainfall could be quite heavy at times, with the possibility of 2 inches or more this week, potentially leading to localized flooding.

Put simply, higher dew points indicate more moisture in the air, and a dew point above 65 degrees means sticky, moist air and oppressive humidity. This deep layer of moisture will enhance the downpours, which could lead to localized flooding Tuesday. Rainfall totals of up to 4 inches are possible in some cases, prompting the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center to place South and Central Texas under a level 2 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall and isolated flooding.
