Something extraordinary happened to me a few weeks past. I had been looking forward to observing our 16-year-old grandson appear in a baseball showcase at a local university. We were all excited about the possibility that he would be playing with other high schoolers from around the West Coast to measure his skills, and to find out where he stood among the elite of the game in his age bracket.

Now I have been around youth baseball for years. I coached our sons in Little League and watched them through high school before picking up with our two grandsons from the time they were 8 or 9. In those years, especially in the early years, the stands were full of highly charged parents, friends and relatives. Noise was at a high level. This was different. The people in the stands were quiet.

What impressed me the most was the conduct of the boys. In practically all cases, these young men did not know each other. They had never seen any of the other players. There was minimum chatter between them, and yet a remarkable thing happened. The coach would yell out “Go for two!” He’d hit a grounder to the second baseman and each of the position players knew exactly what to do.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is what silenced all of us in the stands. It was the realization that these 20-some individuals were together as one for the very first time, and that in itself was not only remarkable, but worthy of our respect.
