As expected, the proposed changes Netflix wants to make with regard to password sharing are gobsmackingly awful and already universally reviled.
Simply put, the new rules seem unsustainable, especially when one considers what counts as a “household.” People travel for work and stream Netflix from their hotels, while others watch during their regular commute. Kids move out or go off to college. People log into Netflix while sleeping over at a friend’s or partner’s house. The company’s definition of a household seems to be fashioned after the archaic “nuclear family” model, which again speaks to the out-of-touch element on display here.
Streaming competitors like HBO Max and Hulu also have rules around password sharing, but they’re not strictly enforced. Anyone with one user’s login information can access their account from anywhere and, in some cases, use it at the same time as another logged-in user. While that’s not exactly the most profitable way to do business, it has fostered a sense of goodwill among users who are now seeing Netflix do the opposite to protect its bottom line.
