Netflix is facing heat for its stance on password-sharing, with actor Justice Smith criticizing the news. The streamer has hinted at a change in its policy for awhile, testing it out in some Latin American countries first. On its U.S. help pages, Netflix originally posted that users would be required to sign in to their own home network every 31 days to continue using the service, prompting immediate outrage from consumers.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY On February 3, Netflix actor Justice Smith joined the chorus on Twitter criticizing the company's new password-sharing crackdown: Smith starred in Netflix's 2016 series The Get Down, where he played one of the main characters, Zeke. Smith went on to co-lead the streamer's 2020 movie All the Bright Places alongside Elle Fanning.Why Netflix Is Trying To End Password Sharing Despite Obvious Controversy Netflix has one main goal in attempting to end password sharing: turn those who were using a friend or family member's account into new subscribers.
The controversy was magnified by the incorrect policy being uploaded to Netflix's help pages initially, as that's where much of the outrage stemmed from. While it's hard to know for sure, it's possible Smith is reacting to the original information on the help pages, which did suggest it would be more difficult for those traveling to use their Netflix accounts.
Once the dust settles and all customers are clear on Netflix's policy, only then will it become apparent if the company's new stance leads to an increase in subscribers. That could certainly happen, with users deciding the device verification isn't worth the trouble, and they'll just spend money on their own account instead. Of course, the flip side is that viewers could turn to another streaming service entirely, leaving Netflix out in the cold.
