Top U.S. officials led by national security adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with Israeli officials Monday for two hours to discuss Israel’s planned incursion into Rafah. “The two sides over the course of two hours had a constructive engagement on Rafah,” according to a White House readout of the call. “They agreed that they share the objective to see Hamas defeated in Rafah. The U.S. side expressed its concerns with various courses of action in Rafah.
Israeli leaders insist that they must enter Rafah to root out Hamas’s remaining battalions. During what was a nearly 2½-hour virtual meeting, senior administration officials laid out their view of what President Biden and Sullivan have publicly called a “better alternative” than a major Israeli military operation to deal with Hamas’s presence in Rafah, according to a U.S. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the White House.
