The United States, Europe and United Arab Emirates have announced plans for a new maritime corridor to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea.

Aid agency World Central Kitchen and Spanish maritime organization Open Arms have loaded a boat in Cyprus with 200 tons of food that they hope will sail to Gaza in the coming days, Spanish-born chef José Andrés told The Washington Post. The plan predates and is unrelated to a U.S. mission announced by the Biden administration Thursday that aims to build a temporary seaport in Gaza for the delivery of aid, said Andrés, a lauded restaurateur who formed World Central Kitchen in 2010.

One of the two groups leading the mission, Open Arms, mostly works on search and rescue in the Mediterranean Sea but previously worked with World Central Kitchen to deliver aid to Ukraine via the port of Odessa. “This mission is highly intricate but exceedingly crucial,” Open Arms said in a statement on a fundraising page on its website. Some humanitarian groups warned that the U.S. plan to build a port and pier to receive humanitarian aid in Gaza could take weeks to come to fruition.
