Efforts to end the shootings along Seattle’s Aurora Ave. corridor are showing mixed results, though many neighbors said they are encouraged by the changes they have seen.
Emphasis patrols became a mainstay in the area with officers specifically assigned to create a high visibility presence. Traffic barriers were installed at key intersections where gun violence had been prominent and the Seattle City Council ultimately adopted a Stay Out of Area of Prostitution ordinance to help limit gang activity, sex trafficking, and turf wars between pimps.
Still, shootings have continued. Through November, Seattle has seen 680 shootings citywide, which is similar to the 678 shootings recorded for all of last year. Many of those have occurred in the North Precinct.
