The McKinney City Council approved the construction of a commercial passenger terminal to expand the McKinney National Airport. We support the need for a...

. Last December, the McKinney City Council approved a $72 million investment that could be transformative to this city of more than 200,000 residents, but also for the region. A third major airport is becoming an imperative for North Texas. However, the plan to expand the McKinney National Airport has been in the conversation at least since the ’90s, and both major airports, Dallas Love Field and DFW International Airport, are currently nearing their capacity.

This expansion will allow the McKinney airport to compete with and complement Love Field and DFW Airport. The City Council approved zoning changes to build a 45,000-square-foot passenger terminal as well as a 1,500-space parking garage with room for large jet-fuel tanks. There would be five new gates and the expanded terminal is expected to be by 2026.There has been some opposition to the project in news reports and social media forums.

“The ballot question asked if residents wanted to go on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars of bond debt to build a passenger terminal,” Fuller told us. “The answer to that question was no. That does not mean residents do not want the convenience, the billion-dollar-a-year annual economic impact, the jobs, etc., if it can be accomplished without ... voting yes for the bond referendum.”

Even if this is a small but vocal minority against the plan, Fuller and the McKinney City Council should continue to work toward community buy-in. There are always questions about traffic, noise pollution, land use and the changing fabric of the city. ResidentsThis decision, however, should not be brought to a referendum, as some suggest. Governing by direct democracy is an invitation to NIMBYism that can threaten not only McKinney but the whole region.
