Q I currently have an infestation of these flea-like beetles. They are coming from the lawn and will bite. They are all over the cement slab, stucco etc. I have a koi pond and a desert tortoise as well. Should I hire a professional to identify and spray, or wait for its lifecycle to pass?
Many lawn pests show up because of either irrigation problems or overfertilization. Do you have adequate drainage in all areas of your yard? If there’s a low spot that’s collecting water, that can become a breeding ground for all sorts of unsavory guests. Less frequent, but deep irrigation will encourage deep roots while discouraging pest invasion. Most pest insects are looking for water, especially in the summer heat, so keeping the soil surface dry will make your lawn less hospitable for them.
Usually, when you find a sticky substance covering a plant, you’re going to find aphids, scales, or some other sucking insects. Your tree appears to be infested with cottony cushion scale.
