A 79-year-old man was killed in a shooting involving NYPD officers outside a station house in Queens. The incident followed another shooting earlier Tuesday involving a detective and a convicted felon on parole.
A 79-year-old man was fatally shot by police officers outside a New York City Police Department station house in Queens on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. outside the 111th Precinct on Northern Boulevard near 215th Street in Bayside. According to authorities, the man exited his vehicle near the station house, approached the building, and engaged in conversation with a uniformed officer stationed outside for security purposes.
During the interaction, the man allegedly drew a firearm and pointed it at the officer. The officer, upon witnessing this, instructed the man to drop the weapon and immediately notified for backup. Additional officers responded to the scene, issuing further commands for the man to relinquish the firearm. However, de-escalation efforts proved unsuccessful. Subsequently, four officers discharged their weapons, striking the 79-year-old multiple times. Officers then administered CPR to the man. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased has not yet been publicly identified. The officers involved in the shooting were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a standard procedure. No officers sustained gunshot injuries. Police reported recovering a loaded firearm at the scene, and the incident was captured on both body-worn cameras of the officers and precinct security cameras. This shooting marked the second instance in less than 24 hours where NYPD officers encountered armed individuals. Earlier on Tuesday morning, a 20-year veteran detective was shot and wounded by 35-year-old Edwin Rivera during an attempt to serve a warrant. According to police, Rivera, a convicted felon on parole, was described by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch as a 'career criminal.' She expressed concern over the circumstances that allowed Rivera to be out of jail, highlighting his history of parole violations and violent offenses. Rivera was also shot in the encounter and both he and the officer are anticipated to recover. Both incidents are currently under internal investigation, a standard protocol whenever an officer discharges their weapon
