The seal, estimated to be 5 to 6 weeks old, was discovered on Sunday, February 16, 2025, prompting a unique call to the New Haven Police Department. Officer Christian Bruckhart, who received the unusual report, confirmed that the seal was indeed a real animal, not a prank.
Officers remained with the seal until officials from the nearby Mystic Aquarium arrived.Francesca Battaglia, an animal rescue technician for the aquarium, explained that the seal had been spotted the previous day near an oyster bar in New Haven. At that time, officials had moved the seal to the beach, but it somehow made its way back to the city streets. Battaglia expressed concern about the seal's welfare, stating that it was likely lost and relying on instincts that were not suited to the urban environment. 'He's probably just lost and figured that these are my instincts, but unfortunately, with the area being so developed, it's not actually a safe place for him,' she told WTNH. 'It definitely was concerning for us when we say he was amidst all that hustle and bustle of the city.'The rescued seal is now at the Mystic Aquarium, where it will receive care and rehabilitation until it is deemed ready for release back into the wild. Battaglia emphasized the aquarium's goal of ensuring the seal's independence. 'We want him to be able to hunt on his own and catch what he needs to support himself,' she said.
