Barth, who served the department for more than five decades, was remembered fondly by his family and colleagues. His daughters expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community to ABC 6 News. They said that it's been a rough morning for the family, but that they're thankful so many people care about their father and want to honor him for everything he did for the police department and the city of Columbus.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of Lt. Barth," said the office of Mayor Andrew Ginther in a statement. "With unwavering service and commitment, he exemplified the highest ideals of duty and integrity throughout his career. Our thoughts are with his family, colleagues and all who knew him during this incredibly difficult time. Lt Barth will be remembered with great respect and gratitude for his selfless service and dedication.
Barth joined the Columbus force in September 1961, and had the unique opportunity to meet every U.S. president -- from John F. Kennedy to Donald Trump. Reflecting on his career, Barth once recalled escorting President Ronald Reagan and spending time with Richard Nixon. He said he didn't get everything done because something called Watergate prevented him," Barth once said.
Despite declining health in recent years, the 85-year-old Barth remained spirited and devoted to his family, the force and the city.
