Approaching her first 30 days in office Thursday, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance said her administration is working toward plans to address Anchorage’s state of homelessness and supported the Anchorage Police Department’s new body camera policy.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Approaching her first 30 days in office Thursday, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance said Tuesday her administration is working toward plans to address Anchorage’s state of homelessness and supported the Anchorage Police Department’s new body camera policy in a wide-ranging interview with Alaska’s News Source.

In total, the administration reported 16 people were charged with felony crimes, with 47 people more being charged with misdemeanor crimes, as well as the seizure of 13 firearms, some of which were reported to have been stolen. Additionally, APD seized 21 grams of cocaine, eight grams of heroin, 3.5 pounds of meth, 1.2 pounds of mushrooms, 3.9 pounds of fentanyl pills, and one gram of fentanyl powder.

“The number of vacancies at APD is very concerning. Individuals are having to work overtime,” LaFrance said. “And so we are — that’s a priority to ensure that our public safety departments are fully staffed up — and we are looking at those foundational aspects of municipal government to make sure that we’ve got that solid base.”
