Retired NBA power forward Kenyon Martin, watching his son K.J. play last season in Denver, will be on hand for the NBA slam-dunk competition to see him in action and says he will be the loudest one in the building.SALT LAKE CITY — Kenyon Martin tried to find the words and seemed to have succeeded. But the more he said, the more his emotions made him want to describe his feelings in ways that were somehow grander.
“I’m a proud papa, man,” Kenyon said. “I’m more ecstatic about K.J.’s career than I was about mine. To see him live out his childhood dream, man, that’s something that words can’t describe. To see that happiness and joy, there’s not enough words to describe the feelings that I have. I knew all along. He needed an opportunity. He’s getting that opportunity now, and he's making the most of it.K.J. Martin always proudly stood on the shoulders of the man he considered a giant.
Theirs has been a partnership, a basketball journey, for most of K.J. Martin’s life. He became a fixture in his father’s locker rooms and on the court at practices. Within two years, when Kenyon Martin was an All-Star in 2004, K.J. was there, too, and they traveled to those weekends nearly every year that followed.
