Doctors on the Isle of Man have accepted a revised pay offer from Manx Care, averting a planned strike and securing an 8% pay increase over two years. The deal also ensures that doctors on the Isle of Man will receive salaries comparable to those in the National Health Service (NHS) in England.
Doctors on the Isle of Man have reached a resolution with Manx Care, ending a dispute over pay that threatened a strike. Members of the British Medical Association (BMA) had planned a 48-hour walkout last week before accepting a revised two-year pay settlement. Out of 167 eligible doctors, 125 participated in the vote, with a resounding 91% in favor of the deal.
The agreement, hailed as a success by both parties, provides doctors with an 8% pay increase retroactive to April 1, 2023, to address the previous financial year's erosion of their salaries. The remaining portion of the pay raise is split into two increments: a 6% increase retroactive to April 2024 and an additional 2% effective February 1st. Crucially, the agreement also ensures that doctors on the Isle of Man will receive salaries comparable to their counterparts in the National Health Service (NHS) in England.Prakash Thiagarajan, a member of the local negotiation committee for the BMA, emphasized that the planned strike action was a last resort. He expressed relief at the successful negotiation of this outcome. Phil Banfield, Chairman of the BMA council, stated that the deal puts Isle of Man doctors on the path to restoring their lost pay. He highlighted the importance of valuing the skills and expertise of doctors and improving their working conditions.
