Doctors in the Isle of Man are set to strike for 48 hours from January 22nd, after negotiations with Manx Care over pay failed. The British Medical Association (BMA) is seeking a 12.6% pay increase, while Manx Care has called the demand 'unaffordable'. Emergency care will remain available during the strike, but many services will be limited.
Manx Care anticipates a counterproposal from a union representing doctors who are scheduled to strike for 48 hours beginning at 07:00 on January 22nd. This strike action follows unsuccessful negotiations regarding a pay dispute. The union had previously requested a 12.6% pay increase for the 2023-24 financial year, a proposal that Manx Care deemed unaffordable.
Manx Care expressed disappointment that the union had chosen to proceed with the strike despite ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the dispute. In a statement, Manx Care emphasized the critical need to finalize its preparations for the strike days to minimize the impact on patients and service users, while simultaneously striving to reach a settlement. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) stated that Manx Care and the British Medical Association (BMA) are collaboratively working towards a fair and affordable pay agreement. While the foundation of an improved offer is actively under discussion, the department acknowledged the workforce's right to take action. The DHSC is supporting Manx Care in mitigating the impact of any potential strike on patients and the public. Details regarding the mitigation plans will be made public once the precise details of the strike action become clearer. Manx Care revealed that it had revised its previous offer of a 6% increase for the 2023-24 year and an additional 4% rise for 2024-25, intended to align salaries with those in England. Last month, a ballot involving 95% of BMA members, including doctors, salaried dentists, and consultants, indicated their willingness to strike. Announcing the planned action on Tuesday, the BMA confirmed that doctors would operate under Christmas day cover during the strike, resulting in limited services but ensuring the availability of emergency care for those in need. Chairman of the Isle of Man Medical Society Prakash Thiagarajan previously stated that doctors do not desire to strike but that the pay cuts experienced over the past decade have become unsustainable
