The mayor's plan for a Major League Soccer stadium took another step forward Wednesday night, but not without pushback from Indy Eleven fans and even some councilors
Indy defeated an MLS team for the first time in its history, reaching the U.S. Open Cup semifinals for the first time.Indy defeated MLS team Atlanta United, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals for the first time. The team has competed in the U.S. Open Cup since 2014. Augi Williams opened the scoring for Indy, putting the visitors up 1-0 in the 31st minute. Douglas Martinez assisted on the goal, Williams' third of the tournament.
This year, 96 amateur and professional teams entered the single-game, knockout-style tournament this year. The tournament got underway in March, with Indy joining the bracket in the third round. Indy had defeated Chicago Fire FC II of the MLS NEXT Pro division, as well as USL Championship rivals San Antonio FC and Detroit FC before knocking off Atlanta on Tuesday night.
