Three or four Mayport-based LCS could still be decommissioned next year if the version of the National Defense Authorization Act approved by the House becomes final as the Pentagon’s 2023 budget.

The House Armed Services Committee last month modified the budget bill to allow retirement of only four Freedom LCS as part of a package of changes that would increase the budget by $37 billion, just $318 million of which involved restoring LCS.

said this week. “…Any funding increase should be oriented to ensure the right balance of forces essential to advancing modernization while sustaining readiness.”Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, told the Armed Services Committee in May that Freedom LCS were marked for retirement mainly because of “an antisubmarine warfare system that was the primary battery, main battery, of that ship that did not work out technically.

LCS “wouldn’t survive for two seconds” in a confrontation with Chinese forces, Smith said, and the money spent on them would be better used on weapons and equipment that Navy leaders consider priorities.
