A Hammond man avoided prison Friday after hitting and killing a woman on Sibley Street, then taking off.
Adrian D. Wyatt, 25, pleaded guilty on Aug. 4 to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death of catastrophic injury, a Level 4 felony. He was sentenced to 5 years — two years in the Lake County Community Corrections Kimbrough work release program, with the rest a mix of home detention and probation. It was a “tragic accident,” his lawyer Michael Campbell said. Hammond Police were called at 9:22 p.m. July 15, 2022 to the 600 block of Sibley Street.
She died in the ambulance, court records show. Police located video showing Wyatt’s car going east on Sibley near Sohl Avenue, striking her, then leaving. A license plate reader traced the car to him. Wyatt told police he had a green light and the intersection was “poorly lit.” By the time he saw her standing in the intersection, it was too late. He drove off and was “scared” to report it, hid his car in a garage for a week and later got his windshield replaced.
