The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs has appointed Jeffrey Newton as the interim commissioner after Gov. Kay Ivey used her executive power to fire the now former commissioner, Kent Davis.

The governor had been pushing for weeks to remove Davis after she said he had a general lack of cooperation, mishandled federal grants and manipulated the board. Following the meeting, Ivey’s legal team delivered a letter to John Saxon, Davis’s attorney, confirming his client was being removed from his position.
