In the 10 states without Medicaid expansion, hospitals are forced to absorb costs of treating patients who can’t pay. This leads to a vicious cycle.
of Thomasville Regional Medical Center in Clarke County is the latest sign that Alabama’s health care system is at a. It is abundantly clear that Alabamians need Gov. Kay Ivey to step in and provide leadership on this critical issue.are closing, critical services are being cut, patient care is suffering, and lives certainly could be lost. Too many Alabamians cannot get care they need, be it from lack of insurance coverage or inability to access facilities or providers.
These facilities and their professional staff are crucial to the communities they serve, literally saving lives every day. Alabamians should be horrified by hospital closures as well as the number of their friends, family and neighbors who do not have access to affordable, quality health care. We should also be tired of sending our federal tax dollars to other states to pay for hospitals to stay open there, while ours close all around us.
There are no more excuses. Gov. Ivey, the solution is clear: expanding Medicaid will stabilize the state’s health care system,Alabama’s health care industry is in crisis. The question now is whether Gov. Ivey will take the steps necessary to save it. We stand in support of a legacy that stops hospital closures and leads to healthier Alabamians.
